2019 is a year of election for Ukraine. Presidential elections will be held on the last Sunday of March, parliamentary elections will follow in autumn. For the presidential elections, 44 candidates have been officially registered. Apart from incumbent Petro Poroshenko, two candidates are expected to have best chances to get into the runoff election: Julija Tymoschenko, former prime minister and head of Batkivshchyna, and Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a TV showman.
Voters will have a chance to pass judgment on President Poroshenko, who has been pushing firmly for EU and NATO integration. The Ukrainian economy was hit severely by the war in the East of the country, but has been showing signs of stabilisation since 2016. Corruption remains a crucial problem.
In this panel discussion, we will take stock of five years Poroshenko. What are the possible outcomes of the presidential elections and what role does Russia play officially and unofficially? What are the approaches of the candidates to resolve the internal and external conflicts? How important is economic connectivity within and around Ukraine and what means North Stream II for Ukraine, politically and economically? These and other questions, such as the human rights situation in the country, will be analyzed and discussed with our distinguished guests.
The discussion will be held in English.
